John William Bentley was born in Paterson in New Jersey in 1880. He became a pupil of George Bridgman (1864-1943) Frank DuMond (1865-1951) and Robert Henri (1865-1929) at the Art Students League of New York, after which he became a talented landscape painter. While based in Woodstock, New York, Bentley made trips to California where he painted on the Monterey Peninsula and at Mission Capistrano.
